eight five trivia

👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽 Hey, hi, hello. It's Dave.

Today is August 5, i.e. 8/5. It is also my oldest brother's birthday. As such, below you will find some questions about 8s, 5s, 85s, birthdays, and brothers.

Wondering why didn't I write five questions or eight questions considering today's date and the theme of this post? Listen, I'm just a guy on a spinning rock hurtling through the cold, endless darkness of space trying to navigate the absurdity of an existence I did not ask for with whatever spirit and aplomb I can muster on a random summer Tuesday. (Read: I didn't think about doing so until just now.)

Anyway, get your helmet on because here we go.

1️⃣ What MLB player —— a 2025 All-Star no less —— wore #85 at the beginning of his career before switching to a less unsightly number?

2️⃣ Who is the only MLB player to wear #85 in a game this season?

3️⃣ What former lottery pick is the only NBA player to ever wear #85? (Sidebar: he did so to honour his grandparents, who raised him in a house on... 85th St.)

4️⃣ Two NBA players who celebrate birthdays on August 5 were taken first overall in the draft. Name both players.

5️⃣ A retired first-overall NFL pick only wore #8 and #5 over the course of his career. His brother also played in the NFL, is also retired, and is the only player in history to lose to 31 different NFL franchises. Name both players.

6️⃣ Only four active NHL players have tallied 85 or more assists in a single season. Three of them have won the Hart Trophy. Two of them have won the Calder. Two of them have won the Stanley Cup. Only one of them has ever been traded. Name all four players.
