quick hits 14/?
Oddball quick hits posts are, generally speaking, links-heavy sports-concerned jetsam and flotsam missives curated and written up by me, combatdavey, a.k.a. your favourite player's favourite player.
I'm starting out today's QH post with a bit of housekeeping:
โค๏ธโค๏ธ This week's QH post is a day late because yesterday was my anniversary and I ran out of time. Mea culpa or whatever.
๐ง ๐ง If you haven't tried your hand at this week's trivia questions, have at 'em. Same thing for last week's questions and the questions from two weeks ago.
Housekeeping over baybee, let's get tf to it!
โพ๐ฃ The Philadelphia Phillies clinched a first-round bye after launching a team record eight homers in a win vs. Miami last night. (ESPN)
โพ๐ฃ Cal Raleigh hit his 59th and 60th homers last night as the Seattle Mariners clinched the AL West with a win over Colorado. Raleigh is just the seventh player to get to 60 and, with four games left, has a shot to break Aaron Judgeโs 2022 AL record (62). Congrats to the Big Dumper. (ESPN)

โพ๐คฎ As a Toronto Blue Jays fan I could go all tinfoil hat conspiracy nut because there's a lot of evidence (here, here, and both things here) to suggest that MLB has it in for the Jays. But as a ball-knower, I also know that the Jays have been absolutely anemic at the plate, scoring 1 run or fewer (!) in 6 out of their last 7 games. Hopefully they can figure out how to hit again before the playoffs because I ate so much butter last night my heart literally may not be able to take another playoff series loss. ๐๐ถ I'm only just getting to NBA Draft Room's little report on the best high school prospects in the nation/world, but I am not surprised that Tyran Stokes and Miikka Muurinen are 1-2. (NBA Draft Room)
๐๐ฅ "The movie is incapable of engaging with a single idea beyond the level of mere cliche, and its sole mode of expression is cynical pastiche, a TikTokified edit of something that only loosely resembles a movie." Defector's Patrick Redford thinks HIM is a big miss by Jordan Peele. (Defector)
๐๐บ Former Cleveland Browns and FCF Zappers QB Johnny Manziel is competing on Season 4 of Special Forces: Worldโs Toughest Test. (Yahoo! Entertainment)
๐๐คฎ After starting the season 0-3, the New York Giants are benching Russell Wilson (Dangeruss if you're nasty) so that rookie Jaxson Dart can get them to 0-4. (NFL)
๐๐ One year after winning a WNBA championship (that was fraudulent because the Minnesota Lynx got jobbed and yes I will die on this hill), the New York Liberty โโ who went out in the first round of the playoffs โโ chose not to renew head coach Sandy Brondello. (Yeah, the language read as odd to me too.) In response to this, two prominent W coaches sounded off. "I am absolutely thrilled if I am Seattle, Toronto, and Portland, that I was just gifted a championship-level coach," said Cheryl Reeve. "Though we're competitors, I think a lot of Sandy personally and professionally." Becky Hammon agreed, saying "When you have a good coach, you keep the good coach. And that doesnโt mean you win every year.โ (SI; Twitter/CallieJLaw)
